SiE09 - Sustainability in European Neurosciences (12:00-12:45)

Neuroscientists are very much aware of the causes and consequences of the current environmental crisis, and yet, as a community, we are being too slow in taking action. Identifying how to prioritise the efforts undertaken in our laboratories and in our research institutions is not always an easy task.
In this special interest event, we will present the Sustainable European Laboratories (SELs) Network (sels-network.org), a new initiative aiming to collect, integrate and disseminate knowledge on sustainable laboratory practices. The SELs Network seeks to help establish green lab initiatives and to facilitate the creation of regional networks working towards sustainability. The SELs Network is currently collaborating with FENS and plans to use the FENS Forum as a case study to quantify and minimize the environmental footprint of scientific meetings. During the event, data about this case study will be presented. There will also be a general discussion about how European neuroscience could move faster and act more efficiently in the fight against climate change. A panel of sustainability professionals and academics will share their viewpoints and discuss implementable initiatives towards an environmentally friendly life-science framework.
